KaiJULY – Whale-shark Boy

What is a Kaiju?

Kaiju is a Japanese genre of films and television featuring giant monsters. The term kaiju (lit. “strange creature”) can refer to the giant monsters themselves, which are usually depicted attacking major cities and engaging the military, or other kaiju, in battle.

What is KaiJuly?

As you can imagine from the definition of kaiju, “kaijune” and “kajuly” are dedicated months to draw your favorite pop culture kaiju or make your own!

I had this little whale-shark boy sitting in my work-in-progress folder for the longest time now and I decided this was the best month to finish & feature him! He’s actually a redraw of an old digital artwork of mine that features a whale-shark mermaid which was done to honor International Whale Shark Day.

I love, love, love whale sharks! They are so huge and so majestic! But they are filter feeders and have a pretty chill demeanor. I just think they’re one of the cutest ocean critters!

I’ve yet to decide on a name for this little (well…not that little) kaiju boi, but I know for sure he isn’t the type of kaiju to attack cities! Unless humans don’t reduce carbon emissions and greenhouse gas emissions….

Peace.
